Give us today our daily bread

" Give us today our daily bread. " - Matthew 6:11, New International Version

My understanding is August and September are the months for wheat harvesting. When I think of wheat, I think of bread. Fresh baked, warm, butter-melting, mouthwatering bread. Whew! When I smell it baking, my mouth waters every time. Bread speaks to comfort, nourishment, fulfillment, and satisfying the body with goodness.

As with natural bread, let it be with the spiritual bread. Jesus confessed, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever" (John 6:51, NIV).

Woodrow Wilson's statement, "No one can worship God or love his neighbor on an empty stomach," encapsulates this profound truth of natural needs reflecting spiritual truth.

Praying, "Give us today our daily bread," is asking, "Lord, give me the comfort, strength, and nourishment of my salvation in Christ I need to live my life for You today." When we ask, God is faithful to hear our prayers and meet our needs. So ask Him every day for your daily bread in prayer.

You need no special words or form, just a humble heart recognizing its limitations, and acknowledging God’s power ready to partake of Divine nourishment in an intimate connection with God Himself. When we do this, we create a space where the Divine meets the human, where Heaven touches Earth, and where our prayers find a home in the heart of God.

Your chaplains are always ready to walk alongside you and support you when you need it.
